Factors to keep in mind for the installation of LED Floodlights
Floodlights are renowned globally for their extensive-beamed illumination and high-intensity widespread illumination. LED Floodlights play a pivotal role in illuminating massive areas like:
- Ground & Field in sports events
- Open settings in concerts & stage shows
- Main entrance gate
- Front & Backyard Areas
- Surrounding Boundaries of Commercial property
- Parking area & wall-washing area of commercial buildings
Factors to consider for installing LED Floodlights
There are certain things an individual needs to keep in mind for an efficient & smooth installation process of LED Floodlights. Let us walk you through the essential factors to consider for installing LED Floodlights & replacing existing lights.
Deciding Location
The foremost factor one should do first is to determine the location where you are looking to set up & place the LED Floodlights. Once you have decided, ensure that the site of installing the new LED Floodlight should be at an adequate height from the ground level for the best wide beam illumination to fulfill your purpose of lighting the specific area.
If you are replacing an old light fixture, the new LED Floodlight should be a minimum of 9 feet from the ground level height for excellent illumination.
Shutting off the primary power circuit breaker box
Once you have properly done the power connection by ensuring the wiring is fitted correctly and determining the accurate positioning of the LED Floodlight, the next step is to ensure that the primary power circuit breaker box is shut down.
This is the crucial factor for preventing your & installer’s life from being put in jeopardy as you will be working around a live power source area for the installation of LED Floodlight, which will involve wiring work.
Once you have finished the wiring of the light boxes, turn on the primary power circuit box breaker.
Removing existing Floodlight fixtures (For old fixtures only)
If you have an old floodlight fixture, remove the existing ones before installing the new ones. The process might seem tricky, but we will simplify it. First, shut off the primary power circuit breaker. Next, you must unscrew the light bulbs & safely put them aside. After that, unscrew the existing fixtures from the wall plate and remove them meticulously. Lastly, check through the voltage tester that the exposed wiring is being terminated correctly.
Wiring the old (replacement) LED Floodlight (Refer to replace existing light)
Once you have removed the old fixture (if you had one), the next step is to wire new LED Floodlights. Follow the below steps:
- Before wiring the new LED Floodlight, ensure that you have the manufacturer's instructions guide manual handy to refer to specific details.
- You must ensure that the wires on the lightbox match the electrical circuit's corresponding wires, i.e., white with white, black with black, and bare wires with the bare wires.
- Once you have matched the corresponding wires, you have to attach & taped the correct wires by using plastic electrical caps. We recommend you use plastic electrical caps to prevent moisture & liquid from penetrating into the electrical circuit and avoiding a short circuit.
- Lastly, screw the Floodlight to the mounting strip with a screwdriver and ensure to twist the light bulbs into their respective fixtures.
Once you have finished the above steps, turn the primary power circuit breaker on to test the lights.
Installing the new Floodlight (only refer to this if you are installing a new floodlight & not replacing the existing one)
Installing a new LED Floodlight might be a bit challenging for you. Follow the below steps to make the installation process simpler & smoother.
- Make the holes using a drill in the exterior area where you have determined to mount the new light fixture.
- Situate a junction box near the determined installation area and strengthen the electrical cable using fish tape through to the junction box for establishing the connection.
- Ensure that the wires on the lightbox match the electrical circuit's corresponding wires, i.e., white with white, black with black, and bare wires with the bare wires.
Once you have finished all the above steps, turn the primary power circuit breaker on to test the lights.
Note: Ensure that the new floodlight can handle an additional wattage without exceeding 80% of its total load capacity.
Sealing the Junction Box Properly
The final & vital step is to ensure that the junction box is being sealed properly to prevent water from entering it. Follow the below steps for properly sealing the junction box.
- Seal around the junction box at the point where the wall plate meets the wall by using a silicone caulk through a caulk gun.
- Carefully insert the caulk cartridge into the caulk gun.
- Position the nozzle of the caulk gun meticulously between the box and the wall at a 45-degree angle.
- Apply a firm pressure to release a drop of silicone caulk and delicately move the caulk gun along the seam.
- Smooth the silicone caulk with the help of the tip of your finger and wipe the excess caulk, if released, with a damp cloth, and allow the applied caulk to dry.
Testing the Floodlight
After following all the above steps, turn the primary circuit breaker on. The new LED Floodlights will be turned on. If they aren't turned on, check if any wiring is loose or not correctly fitted by referring to the manufacturer's manual.
